Ways to Volunteer

Become a Tournament Judge

Dallas Urban Debate tournaments are rigorous academic competitions. For many, tournaments are a rare opportunity to have their ideas about important issues considered seriously by adults. Judging is a great way to interact with and help our students by observing them during competition and providing feedback. One of our biggest needs is volunteer judging.  No experience required.

Commitment level: You can come in for one 2-hour debate, or judge for a full day at any of our 18+ tournaments.

Tournament Event Staff

Dallas Urban Debate tournaments involve hundreds of students, but very few staff members. One of larger needs is reliable staff to help facilitate meal times, prepare the afternoon snack bags, set up awards, set up and monitor our volunteer hospitality area, and otherwise help set up a building and run the event.

Commitment level: You can come in for one 2-hour chunk of time or stay all day. Help is needed either before our tournament competitions on a Friday during the day and/or throughout the weekend competitions.

Debate Center Lecturer

Dallas Urban Debate will run a series of regional “Debate Center” training sessions over the course of the 2015-2016 school year. We need volunteers who have prior experience in debate to lead seminar sessions on a range of topics. This is a great opportunity to share your knowledge with students who often lack access to national-level argument and concept coaching.

Commitment level: You run a 90 minute seminar on a topic of your choosing during one weekday evening.
